Large horizontal turning centers

JOHNFORD’s slant-bed light-to-medium CNC lathes offer a wide range of accessories such as sub-spindles, live tool turrets, and steady rests.

The Johnford ST Series is a premier line of high-performance, heavy-duty slant-bed CNC horizontal turning centers engineered by Roundtop Machinery Industries. Designed specifically for large-diameter turning, long-shaft machining, and aggressive metal removal on oversized components, this series serves demanding industries like energy, aerospace landing gear, and heavy infrastructure equipment. The ST platform provides industry-leading mass, structural rigidity, and thermal stability to handle the heaviest cylindrical parts with consistent accuracy.

Key Features

  • Rigid Meehanite Casting: Constructed with a massive, one-piece 60° torque-tube slant bed cast from premium Meehanite iron, maximizing structural rigidity while optimizing chip flow and heat dissipation. [1, 4, 5]
  • True 60° Alignment Plane: The headstock, tailstock, and saddle are all aligned on the exact same 60° plane. This minimizes thermal expansion growth and maintains geometric precision under heavy loads.
  • High-Torque Gearbox Spindles: Equipped with robust 2-speed or 4-speed gear-driven spindles paired with high-horsepower motors, delivering the brutal low-end torque required for deep, stable cuts on tough alloys.
  • Heavy-Duty Square Box Ways: All axes feature wide, induction-hardened and precision-ground square box ways. Mating surfaces are hand-scraped and Turcite-B coated for vibration damping and superior friction properties.
  • Massive Work Capacity: Offers an extensive range of configurations with swing-over-beds up to 1,200 mm and distances between centers spanning all the way up to 10 meters.
  • Versatile Configurations (Y-Axis & Sub-Spindle): Available with active multi-tasking C-axis turning, live tool turrets, high-stroke Y-axis capabilities, and programmable sub-spindles or twin-turret variations to finish complex parts in a single setup.
Twin-chuck System: Especially for oil & gas industries, heavy shafts require front chuck and rear chuck to clamp to minimize the part vibration during cutting.
